Montblanc Writers Edition Homage to Jane Austen Limited Edition 97 Fountain Pen

Few authors in literary history have had the ability to craft dialogue and bring characters to life as elegantly, ironically and astutely as British author Jane Austen.Montblanc has created the Writers Edition Homage to Jane Austen to celebrate one of English literature’s most famous authors. A key element in Jane Austen’s work is the experience of travel, since journeys and excursions often function in her narratives as catalysts for both romantic encounters and inner turmoil. Borrowing from the horse-drawn carriages of the period, the barrel’s ruthenium-coated solid Au 750 gold skeleton overlay resembles a harness, while the gradient effect of the lacquer underneath in a wave pattern suggests a wafting horse’s mane. Complementing the barrel, the cap is made of embossed yellow English cowhide, inspired by the interior of the elegant travelling carriages. It is refined with a ruthenium-coated, solid Au 750 gold inlay with Jane Austen’s initials, as seen on the letter case carved for her by her brother. In honour of the novel Pride and Prejudice, the ruthenium-coated solid Au 750 gold cap ring is inscribed with the Roman numerals LVI.This number alludes to chapter 56 of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in which Lady Catherine de Bourgh hastens by carriage to visit Miss Bennet to ‘clear the air’ and quell any hopes of marriage. Her style of writing proved popular, and the first editions of her works quickly sold out, yet nobody outside her family knew her to be the author.The title page of her novel Sense and Sensibility, published in 1811, merely declared the work to have been written ‘By a Lady’.This statement of authorship adorns the cap top of the Writers Edition Homage to Jane Austen Limited Edition 97, along with the solid Au 750 signature gold Montblanc emblem.The silhouette of the writing instrument itself resembles a wax seal stamp, similar to the one Jane Austen would have used. The signature gold-coated clip of the Writers Edition Homage to Jane Austen Limited Edition 97 is every bit as unusual as its cap. Shaped like a braided cord with a drawstring closure, it resembles that of a pouch (reticule) used to carry powder, a mirror and the indispensable pocket handkerchief.The only known silhouette of Jane Austen, showing her delicate features, is immortalised as an artistic engraving on the handcrafted, bicolour solid Au 750 gold nib.The solid Au 750 signature gold forepart and the fittings add the finishing touches to the design.Limited to only 97 pieces – a nod to the original year of publication of Pride and Prejudice, 1797.
